Legal Translation Services Compared

Specialist legal translation, general translation or AI: which approach is right for your document?

Not every document requires the same level of translation expertise.

For everyday communication, a quick translation may be enough to understand the general message. But when a document establishes rights, creates obligations, supports litigation or affects a financial transaction, accuracy becomes significantly more important.

The question is not simply whether the translated text sounds natural.

It is whether the translation conveys the meaning of the original document accurately, consistently and appropriately within its legal context.

Comparing Your Options

Translation approach Potential advantages Important considerations
AI and automated translation Immediate results and low initial cost; useful for obtaining a preliminary sense of uncomplicated material. May produce fluent but misleading text, miss legal distinctions or introduce inconsistent terminology. Confidentiality also requires consideration.
Generalist human translation Professional language skills and suitable for many everyday or non-specialist documents. The translator may not have detailed knowledge of the legal systems or terminology involved.
Specialist legal translation Combines linguistic competence with legal knowledge, contextual research and terminology management. Requires professional expertise, time and a fee appropriate to the complexity of the work.
Jurtrans Greek–English legal translation Focuses specifically on Greek–English legal and financial texts, supported by decades of experience and knowledge of Greek and Cypriot law. Best suited to documents requiring specialist legal or financial expertise rather than routine general-language translation.

Why Is Specialist Legal Translation Different?

Legal concepts do not always have direct equivalents

The Greek and Cypriot legal systems have their own terminology, institutions and procedures.

A term that appears similar to one used in English law may perform a different function.

A specialist translator must understand that difference before deciding how best to communicate the meaning.

Context matters as much as vocabulary

The same term can have different implications depending on the type of document, the relevant law and the circumstances in which it is used.

A court judgment, commercial agreement and piece of legislation each impose different demands on the translator.

Professional legal translation takes those differences into account.

Consistency can affect interpretation

Defined terms, contractual obligations, procedural references and financial terminology should be treated consistently.

Unnecessary variation can create uncertainty about whether two expressions refer to the same legal concept.

Specialist terminology management helps prevent avoidable inconsistencies.

Verification matters

Legal documents may refer to legislation, procedural rules, institutions and judgments.

Those references sometimes require additional research to ensure that the translated terminology reflects the source accurately.

This is a process that goes beyond ordinary linguistic proofreading.

Can AI Replace a Specialist Legal Translator?

AI translation tools have improved considerably and can be useful in appropriate circumstances.

However, there is an important distinction between a translation that reads convincingly and one that is legally accurate.

Automated systems can produce plausible language without reliably identifying the legal significance of particular terms, distinctions or references.

Research co-authored by Jurtrans founder John O’Shea in 2026 examined AI and machine translation of Greek legal texts into English. It identified persistent accuracy challenges in this specialist context.

For documents involving litigation, property transactions, commercial obligations or regulatory compliance, professional legal-linguistic assessment remains important.

Translation, Reviewing and Certification: Different Requirements

Clients sometimes need a full translation. Others already have a draft or require documentation for formal submission.

These requirements should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.

Full specialist translation involves working from the original text to produce a translation suitable for the agreed purpose.

Review of an existing translation may require checking the source text, terminology and legal meaning throughout. An automated draft cannot necessarily be made reliable through minor editing alone.

Certified, sworn or notarised translation requirements concern the formal status or authentication of a translation. The necessary procedure depends on the institution, country and intended use. Certification does not, by itself, replace the need for specialist accuracy.

If your translation is intended for a court, public authority or other official recipient, establish the recipient’s requirements before commissioning the work.

When Should You Choose Jurtrans?

Jurtrans is particularly suited to Greek–English translations of:

  • Court judgments, pleadings and litigation documents.
  • Commercial agreements and contractual documentation.
  • Corporate records and company-law documents.
  • Financial statements, banking and securities documents.
  • Property transactions, notarial deeds and leases.
  • Legislation, regulatory documentation and public procurement materials.

Our role is to provide legally informed translations that help you understand and communicate the contents of important documents.

The Cost of a Translation Is Not Only Its Price

A lower initial cost may be attractive, but it is worth considering the consequences of an inaccurate translation.

An unclear contractual obligation, mistranslated procedural term or incorrect legal reference may require additional clarification or corrective work.

Specialist legal translation is an investment in the reliability and usability of the document.

Make an Informed Choice
