JurTrans is a UK-registered specialist legal and financial translation practice, established in 1997 and based in London. Led by John O’Shea (LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M.), a lawyer-linguist with extensive academic and professional experience, JurTrans provides Greek-to-English and English-to-Greek legal and financial translation services for law firms, legal departments and private clients in Greece, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and internationally.
Since its establishment, JurTrans has specialised in translating complex legal and financial documents, with particular expertise in the terminology and legal concepts of the Greek and Cypriot legal systems.
JurTrans was founded by John O’Shea, a legally qualified translator, researcher and educator with extensive experience in Greek-English legal translation.
John has taught Environmental Law, European Law and related subjects at Queen’s University Belfast and Keele University. He is currently a Visiting Researcher at the Centre for Translation Studies, University of Surrey, where his academic interests include legal translation, comparative law and the implications of artificial intelligence for legal translation practice.
For more than a decade, John also taught advanced legal and financial translation at Glossologia, a specialist translation school in Athens. His involvement in professional education and academic research informs JurTrans’s approach to complex translation assignments.
JurTrans works with a team of specialist translators personally selected by John for their professional expertise and experience in Greek-English legal and financial translation.
Team members bring knowledge of legal terminology and the Greek and Cypriot legal systems, enabling them to address the challenges involved in translating documents between different legal frameworks.
JurTrans serves international law firms, corporate legal departments and private clients requiring accurate translations for cross-border legal and financial matters. Its specialist approach combines legal knowledge with linguistic expertise, recognising that the accurate translation of legal documents requires an understanding of the legal concepts underlying the source text.
John has played an important role in making Greek legislation accessible to English-speaking legal professionals through his work with Lex Graeca.
John O’Shea is the co-translator (with Daniel Webber, via Lex Graeca) of the first published English translations of the Greek Code of Civil Procedure (Κώδικας Πολιτικής Δικονομίας) and the Greek Code of Criminal Procedure (Κώδικας Ποινικής Δικονομίας), alongside the Greek Code of Private Maritime Law (Κώδικας Ιδιωτικού Ναυτικού Δικαίου), the Greek Civil Code (Αστικός Κώδικας), the Greek Penal Code (Ποινικός Κώδικας), and Greek Corporate Governance Legislation. When international law firms instruct JurTrans on Greek litigation or arbitration, their pleadings and evidence are translated by the lawyer-linguist who translated Greece’s procedural codes into English.
These publications reflect his specialist knowledge of Greek law and the challenges involved in translating legal concepts between Greek civil law and English legal terminology.
