In the field of Greek-English legal translation, the legal translator often has to deal with older, purist Greek texts. In legal translation, the translator must be keenly aware of the shift from purist to demotic Greek.

Prof. Karolina Gortych-Michalak asserts that legal language is a part of national language, a sublanguage; not an isolated independent language. Because of the shift from purist to demotic Greek in the legal sphere, an interesting point for legal translation is whether there is any continuity in the language.

In a recent article she poses the question, “has there been continuity in Greek legal language from 1974 to the present day?” A series of legal linguistic analyses are performed and the answer is clearly in the affirmative: there is continuity in Greek legal language from 1974 to the present day despite the shift from purist to demotic Greek.
